Concert Review: It’s a Cole World

Last night I went to see J. Cole perform at my school, Seton Hall University. Upon arrival, I grabbed a cup of free Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Wait, what? Well it so happens that the concert is part of something called the Campus Consciousness Tour and Ben & Jerry’s is one of their sponsors. The Campus Consciousness Tour “aims to inspire and activate students in an electric atmosphere while leaving a positive impact on each community the tour visits.” The past few semesters they have toured to various college campuses with headlining artists such as Janelle Monáe, Wiz Khalifa, Passion Pit, and Drake. Environmental consciousness + ice cream + good music = something I can definitely get behind. Anyway, back to the concert: Continue Reading »

What it’s all About: Anonymous

As someone deeply in love with the words of the oh so famous William Shakespeare, I dreaded watching Columbia Pictures’ 2011 film Anonymous.  I actively avoided seeing it, getting worked into a soapbox frenzy each time previews were sighted, bellowing at any poor soul who happened to be within earshot that:

“Shakespeare was a real person!  What is wrong with our society that we are so insecure that we want to discredit one of the most talented and awe-inspiring writers of all time?!?!?!”

Needless to say, I put watching this off for months, afraid of what I might see.  Today, I finally gave in and I must admit it was an extremely difficult movie to watch for someone who considers themselves a Shakespeare lover to the core.  That being said…I must say… Anonymous was a superb film. Make Your Own: S’Mac Style Cheeseburger Macaroni

I recently visited a small New York staple (if you happen to be around the 14th street area) to purchase some comfort food I could indulge in. Not being someone to care about calories when it comes to comfort food, I wanted to eat some ooey gooey Cheeseburger Macaroni by the spoonful and I wanted it from S’mac.

S’mac has a great reputation among my fellow university students for being tasty and not too expensive for what it is. Having spent over 11 dollars on salad and water before, I didn’t think twice when it came to dropping some green on an actually filling and delicious meal that would last me more than a few hours. The Claire Dress by Zoe Damacela

Working in the beauty department at Seventeen Magazine opened the doors for me to a number of things, but the last thing I would have thought it would get me is a graduation dress.

Zoe's October 2011 Seventeen Magazine Cover!

Thanks to their Pretty Amazing cover contest, I had to the opportunity to meet five pretty amazing (pun intended) girls.  One of them, who would eventually become the winner and score a cover and feature story in Seventeen, was Zoe Damacela.  Zoe started her own clothing company at the age of 14 after taking a sewing class in school.  Since then, she has designed clothes for the likes of Tyra Banks and been honored by Oprah and President Obama.  After all that she’s accomplished, you’d never guess that she started off homeless.  Zoe’s determination and knack for entrepreneurship helped her to get to where she is today – a sophomore at Northwestern University, running her own very successful clothing company.  I don’t know about you, but I’d certainly call that pretty amazing.

But what does that have to do with my graduation dress?

What does New Jersey smell like?

It depends who you ask, really. Does New Jersey smells like its beaches, woods, swamps, farms, or cities? Hairspray? A spray tan? Yes, we have them all! Of the many smells of Jersey, the nicest one is from the amazing Jersey-based perfume line, United Scents of America. They have interpreted New Jersey’s scent in a fun new way. With notes of buttered popcorn, cotton candy, caramel, and vanilla, this perfume smells like the better parts of the Jersey Shore boardwalk.

The Concert Experience

This Friday I’m going to a J. Cole concert being held at my school. Who is J. Cole you may ask? He is a Grammy Award-nominated rapper best known for his songs “Work Out” and “Can’t Get Enough.” His much-talked about mixtapes eventually landed him a record deal with Jay-Z’s label Roc Nation. And apparently he was born in Germany.

In preparation for the general admission craziness I’ll be dealing with, I have created a list of things for you and me to keep in mind for our prospective concert adventures.

Manicure Monday: Violet Daze

As you may or may not know, manicures are my thing.  Little Orphan Annie might say that you’re never fully dressed without a smile, but I like to say that you’re never fully dressed without a fresh mani.

My boyfriend at I at our last college formal!

Last Thursday, I was getting ready for my last college formal.  I wanted to go all out.  I already had the perfect dress, the perfect shoes, and the perfect date, but what was I going to do for my nails?  My dress was white, so my makeup (and my nails) were going to be bold.  Bright purple bold.

Fast forward to later on that night.  A girl from one of my classes, who I had never actually spoken to, came running up to me.  “Just so you know, I pointed you out to my friends from across the room.  I won best nails for my sorority superlative, but I told everyone that the girl that sits in front of me in Media Criticism has the BEST nails.  Can I show my friends your nails?”  She may or may not have been under the influence of alcohol, but drunken words are sober thoughts, right?  Her compliments boosted my confidence for the night.  Here’s what I did that may have cemented my name in Villanova manicure history!

Making of Rihanna’s New Music Video

Tomorrow, April 30, at 9 AM EST, Rihanna’s music video for her latest single “Where Have You Been” will premiere on VEVO. This song is one of my favorites on RiRi’s latest album Talk That Talk so I was surprised it wasn’t getting a lot of buzz when the album was released. However, it looks like the Calvin Harris-produced track (Harris also produced “We Found Love” and is a major player in the EDM/house music world) is being released just in time to become a possible summer banger.

Strategic indeed. Take a look behind the scenes:
