So You Think You Can Dance: Season 9 Finale Highlights

Congratulations to America’s favorite guy and girl dancers: Chehon and Eliana! Last night’s finale episode looked back at everyone’s favorite routines from the past season and also had a few new pieces sprinkled in. Unfortunately for me, I was left with some slim pickins because most of the music wasn’t new anymore. So in this post, I’ll be choosing my favorite routines!

Top 20 Group Opening Routine

This beautiful piece was choreographed by Sonya Tayeh and Christopher Scott. It reminded me how talented the top 20 was this year. The song used was Nathan Lanier’s “Torn.” Some highlights: Cyrus and some of the girls at 1:30; Daniel and Chehon putting their classical ballet training to use at 1:43; the girls at 1:48; the moment at 2:03…okay I’ll stop now.

Hip-hop routine with contestant Cyrus, Christopher Scott, Twitch, and Comfort

I’m not into glitchy dubstep so the Messinian song that choreographer Christopher Scott used wasn’t really doing it for me – however it is a great song to do animation hip-hop to. For me, the person I couldn’t take my eyes off in this piece was actually Christopher. I felt kind of bad focusing on the choreographer, but he’s an incredibly gifted dancer so it was inevitable.

Contemporary routine with contestants Tiffany and George

Tiffany and George are among the best dancers the show has ever had, so when they were grouped with Sonya Tayeh for a contemporary piece, it’s no surprise that it would be brilliant. They performed this in the first week of competition and I was just as blown away last night when they did it again. The song is “Turning Page” by Sleeping At Last.

Top 10 and All Stars hip-hop routine

Admittedly I was a little skeptical when I heard the opening bars of that song from Lion King but I was dead wrong to be. Choreographed by couple Napoleon and Tabitha D’umo (aka Nappytabs), the piece was cinematic, animalistic, and exciting. The ladies seriously brought it at 1:37 (those hand claps!!). Marko’s run at 2:20 was awesome as well. I would recommend watching this in HD.

Thanks for following along with me this season!

About Camille G.

Camille's passion for music began at the advent of the very illegal Napster, which she maaay or may not have used at the time. This interest made a natural progression into learning and teaching herself how to play various instruments for fun. Due to a lack of actual talent and the desire for job predictability, she graduated from Seton Hall University in nursing. When she has time off from her job as a registered nurse in NJ, she enjoys digging through the internet for new things to listen to. Sharing her discoveries and favorite songs with friends through mix CDs, playlists, blogs, and parties is the part of the music experience she enjoys the most, so this is a great opportunity for her to do just that.
