Immortals: Not the Stuff of Legends

On a beautiful Friday night, after a lovely week of flowers in the park, blossoming trees, and sunshine all around, I felt the sudden urge for a violent manly film.  When I mean a manly film I mean I want to see sex, violence and plenty of action.  No need to have a strong storyline or depth—just think of what the most macho, stereotypical, man you know would want to watch and that’s what I was in the mood for.  As I rifled through my TV’s On-Demand selection I came across Immortals, the 2011 action film that people had likened to the badass film 300, when it first came out.  The description read as follows: “In a world where gods and mortals battle for supremacy over the earth, a warrior, Theseus [played by sexy Tutors Henry Cavill], embarks on a quest to defeat the forces of evil which threaten the fate of all mankind”.  This seemed to be JUST what I was looking for!

Well….it wasn’t.   I’m sorry to break it to all involved with that film but unlike 300, this flick was not only not the stereotypical manly movie I thought I was getting involved with but wasn’t in fact even a good film worth watching regardless of your mood!  Unless, that is, you’re in the mood for a film that leaves you unsatisfied.  Perhaps the director Tarsem Singh felt Cavill’s ridiculously sexy body would detract from the fact that this film was jerky in transitions, didn’t develop characters enough to make viewers care about their plights, and created a hero that got his ass kicked throughout the film and couldn’t accomplish any mission he undertook without incurring significant damage to himself. Shoesday Tuesday: BCBG Paris Rando Wedge Sandal

With my college graduation date approaching faster than I ever could have imagined, everyone I know is talking about graduation dresses.  Should we stick with all white?  Does it matter since we’ll be covered in huge, black gowns?  I’ve come to realize that the most important part of your graduation outfit is … your shoes.

Under your big robe, square cap, and hopefully tons of honor cords, no one can really see what dress you spent hours, maybe even days, trying to pick out.  Your shoes, on the other hand, will be out in the open.  I learned from four years of Catholic high school uniforms that when everyone is in uniform, your shoes stand out more than you’d ever imagine.  Curious as to what shoes I’m dying to wear for graduation?  None other than the star of the latest DSW commercials, the BCBG Paris Rando Wedge Sandal.  If you’ve finished gazing at the above photo in awe, read on.

Thriving

I’m usually wary of books that leave a copious amount of blank journal pages intended for my note keeping. I tend to fill them with jabs like “Note to author: finish book.”  While having spots dedicated to readers’ personal reflections always feels like a bit of a cop-out, there still seems to be some promise in Dr. Vonda Wright’s Guide to Thrive. As soon as I realized that the teenage-looking model on the cover was actually orthopedic surgeon, mother, and author Vonda herself, I knew she had to be doing something right. Continue Reading »

Manicure Monday: DIY Nail Stickers!

As posting pictures and tutorials of weekly manicures has become an internet sensation across Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, and Pinterest, I’ve decided to make it a weekly addition to the Collabor-eight!

I have been a manicure enthusiast since I can remember – honestly. I remember sitting around watching my mom paint her nails in absolute awe of how beautifully long her nails were and how she could effortlessly switch from using her right hand to her left hand.  “Practice,” she explained.  Years and years later (okay, I’m not that old), my friends now tell me how talented I am when it comes to a bottle of OPI.

And I’ve never been one to go get my nails done, either.  I think I got them professionally done for junior prom.  But why pay someone for something I can do myself?  So because of my slight obsession and my years of practice, all posted Mani Mondays will be my work on my nails!

This week, I was tempted to try a tutorial posted on The Beauty Department, Lauren Conrad’s fairly new beauty blog (which, if you don’t read, you totally should).  This week, I’ve attempted – and conquered – DIY nail stickers.

Trend Report: Mermaids!

There’s definitely a reason that mermaids have always been so alluring, and I’m guessing it’s not because they smell like brine. Maybe it’s the effortlessly sexy hair and their perfect tans (somehow achieved despite dwelling below layers of darkness.) Whatever their secrets, their mythical beauty is not that unachievable. I was inspired by two great nail polishes I’ve been rocking lately: OPI’s Mermaid’s Tears (from the Pirates of Caribbean collection) and Deborah Lippmann’s Mermaid’s Dream. But these aren’t the only great mermaid-inspired products out there. Here, I’ve put together some of my tried-and-true favorites: Continue Reading »

Raising Eyebrows: Worth More Than A Browse

The relationship I share with my eyebrows is almost comical.  They’re blonde, so I usually make excuses and forgive them their unruliness. I can generally ignore them, but I still have an instant flash of self-hatred every time I catch a glimpse of them in my car’s rearview mirrors. (What is it about car mirrors that make us look so awful? Is it all that pesky natural sunlight combined with the mirrors’ utilitarian magnifying powers?)  So when I had the opportunity to pick up a book all about eyebrows, I wondered if I would retain interest at all.   Imagine my delight when the first few pages of Raising Eyebrows: Your Personal Guide to Fabulous Brows by Cameron Tuttle called me out on my brow excuses and asked me to define my brow relationship.
