Trend Report: Dragonfly Gems

Fantasia Fiori Simulated Pearl Encrusted Dragonfly Brooch, $65, 1928.com

One time, (or maybe even more than once) I was sitting in the park and out of nowhere, a dragonfly dive-bombed into my face. I guess I must have gotten over it, because I’m totally digging the latest jewelery trend: glitzy dragonfly gems. These (usually) graceful creatures aren’t just hot on the runways — they’re in high demand, as we can tell by fashion searches on sites like Polyvore. Check out my favorites from the range of these glamorous high-fashion accessories here!

Alexander McQueen Gold-Tone Swarovski Crystal Dragonfly Necklace, $350, net-a-porter.com

There’s something inherently cool about dragonflies, which makes them a great fashion muse. They’re not as obviously beautiful as butterflies, but they don’t have the creep factor that lots of bugs share. From Alexander McQueen’s artistic gems to Tiffany’s classic styles, dragonflies will be fluttering around fashionistas’ necks, wrists, and lapels this spring.

There’s a trick to rocking these delicate pieces while still making a major impact: one strategically placed strand is all you need to draw in viewers. Any more than that, and you’ll look like you spent one too many hours down by the swamp.

Tiffany & Co. Dragonfly Charm, $125, and Chain, $50, Tiffany.com

Pin a brooch to your scarf or add a charm to your dainty chain to add some edgy personality to your sweet style.

A great place to start for dragonfly inspiration is Alexander McQueen’s spring collection. From actual clothing textiles decked out with fluttering friends to a wraparound dragonfly cuff bracelet, the lace-like wings and bedazzled eyes will leave you mesmerized.

I have the ring version of this silver Tiffany’s creature, which I wear frequently to the chorus of many compliments. If you are looking to try out the dragonfly trend without overwhelming your whole outfit with nods to nature, this dainty Tiffany’s

Juicy Couture Dragonfly Stud Earrings, $32.00, juicycouture.com

necklace or stud earrings — like the ones below from Juicy Couture — are your best bets. They add a little bit of whimsy to even the simplest look!

Swarovski Tilly Dragonfly Earrings, $75, harrods.com

Dragonfly accessorization, like a lot of tongue-in-cheek trends, is most successful when you embrace subtle, yet eye-catching pieces. You don’t even have to LOVE dragonflies to make a big fashion statement.

For a less obvious homage to the trend, check out these dragonfly-wing dangling earrings. The intense red studs will do enough of the decoration. But trust me, everyone will do a double take when they catch a glimpse of the paper-thin wing charms.

Are you bugging out over this clever jewelry trend? Let us know how you’re rocking your high-flying styles!
