When I was in high school, I had to wear a uniform. Everyone had the same shirt, the same skirt (it was an all-girls’ school), and the same knee-highs. The only way to show your sense of style was through your accessories and your shoes. That experience really made me appreciate fashion in general, but especially shoes, more. The shoes you wear can really make a statement about who you are, what your style is, and even what you like to do.
For today’s Shoesday Tuesday, we’re going to take a sneak peek into our editors’ personalities by looking at their favorite shoes. Read on!
“I bought this gray checkered pair of Vans in high school because I wanted a pair of the classic style, but not the plain black-and-cream ones seen on every skateboarder ever. They started out as easy kicks that went with every casual outfit I could think of. Because they go with everything and slip-on shoes are amazing at airport security, this pair quickly became my ultimate travel shoes. They’ve been on planes, trains, cars, and buses everywhere you can imagine. They’ve actually been to 16 countries with me! Now they’re falling apart, full of holes and tears, but I absolutely refuse to trade them out for another pair!” – Kristine, Editor-in-Chief
“I studied abroad in Milan two years ago. Everyone knows that Italian fashion – Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Emilio Pucci, etc – is revered worldwide. No, I didn’t buy any designer brands while I was there. I got these shoes from a little shoe shop in a town called Pavia for 10 euro. That was like $15 at the time! I’m always really proud of myself when I find deals, but I couldn’t believe these shoes were so inexpensive. The soles and heels are actually made of wood. The uppers are made of real leather. Add a few gems, and voila! There aren’t very many places that I can wear these shoes, but they’re definitely a conversation starter when I do wear them. And they’re actually pretty comfortable! They’re my truly unique find.” – Kathleen, Style Editor
“My favorite shoes are my Nike fusion sneakers. I always feel energized and ready to take on the world when I’m wearing them. They’re my first and only pair of sneakers that I’ve purchased as an adult and since buying them I’m much healthier and more up for a run or trip to the gym. Loving your workout gear is half the battle for motivating to get out and exercise ;-)” – Amber, TV and Movies Editor
“My favorite pair of shoes of the moment are my new Doc Martins in this dark forest green shade. As a child of the 90’s, I had a big thing for Daria on MTV (back when they actually had a reason for the M!) I loved her character, with all the biting sarcasm and realistic view of the world (good and bad), but I especially loved her boots. Sure, she was a cartoon, but a cartoon with style. I developed a love for all kinds of boots and Doc Martins, despite the heat back home. I was forced to wear sandals and leave my boots safely tucked away in my dreams. Now that I live in NY and Fall is something more than a decorative theme for seasonal calendars, I can finally wear these shoes I love. I am obsessed with this green color because it stands out without being gaudy. Also, they are pretty comfortable. So these are my personal pick!” – Tashay, Food Editor
“I just got these Type Z loafers about 2 weeks ago and they’re quickly turning into my new favorite pair for this fall. I’m a sucker for leopard print but since I’m not quite bold enough to wear it in my clothing, I figured going for a pop on my feet was the way to go. I was relieved to find that they fit more comfortably than most of the other shoes I own. Loafers, slippers, smoking shoes – whatever you want to call them – are becoming a standard flat for a lot of women right now. If you want something a little different from a ballerina flat, go for this style!” – Camille, Music Editor
