Need a simple hair update? Ballerina buns were the hairstyle of the moment at the Christian Siriano Spring 2013 runway show at New York Fashion Week. This head-topping topknot is great for giving your hair a rest from heat styling. Plus, the style instantly makes you look taller and chicer. Check out all the pictures I got backstage before the show along with tips and tricks to recreating the style straight from the Aveda hair team who styled the show. (Turns out, I’ve been making it much more complicated this whole time. Bad ex-ballerina, bad!)
I got a little camera snap-happy backstage (can you blame me?) and the result is that you get tons of buns to check out! Wait a minute…that sounds sketchier than I meant it to. You know what I mean.
Models with every hair color and texture were styled with these perfect (but not overly “done”) buns. Since I had never been able to secure my own hair into this twisty, voluminous topknot — they’re always flat and full of flyaways– I took the opportunity to ask the Aveda team about the process.
Everyone’s hair was prepped with Aveda Pure Abundance Spray for volume and hold that doesn’t sacrifice the hair’s natural texture. This model — bless her soul– was very patient with me as I tried to get a picture of “the swirl.”As the model flipped her hair over, the stylist raked it all into a high ponytail. Then she began to twist the entire tail into a swirl (think unicorn horn.) As she twisted, the stylist started to circle all of the hair into
a bun as usual. Once it was all gathered and secured with a hair color-matching elastic, the bun was then fluffed up and tugged out to be a little more voluminous. See the glorious finished product?
The Aveda team explained this style as every girl’s easy go-to look for Spring. Low maintenance and high glamour is a style we can definitely get behind! I’ve met a lot of professionals stylists who claim they want 30-second hairstyles, but they take about an hour making it look just so. But at this backstage, all the girls were in and out of the chair in minutes. Can you imagine! Let us know if you try out this style. We love success stories!
As promised, more buns:
