Last week, Punxsutawney (it took me embarrassingly long to type that out) Phil saw his shadow, meaning another six weeks of winter. I have one word in reaction to that: UGH. I know Mr. Phil’s prediction is just supposed to be taken with a grain of salt but it further solidifies that it’s been a longgg winter here in the northeast. In any case, I think we all need a little auditory stimulation to get us through as we trudge through the snow and ice and slush. Click through to listen and download the playlist:
1. Walk the Moon, “Shut Up and Dance”
A fun song from a fun band. Just do what they tell you and you’ll be okay.
2. Redinho, “Get You Off My Mind” ft. Brendan Reilly
Every time I hear the intro, I can’t help but start doing weird wave dance moves with my arms. Oh, no one else gets the same urge? Okay…
3. Shift K3Y, “Touch”
This UK garage track makes me so happy. Yay Shift K3Y!
4. The Knocks, “Classic” ft. Powers
I need to be at a pool party in a tropical area with this blasting STAT.
5. Skrillex & Diplo, “Dirty Vibe” ft. G-Dragon & CL
G-Dragon and CL are each part of the biggest K-pop groups in the scene (Big Bang and 2NE1 respectively) so it’s very cool to see the K-pop and American EDM worlds collide in this track. It’s traptastic.
6. Baauer, “One Touch” ft. AlunaGeorge and Rae Sremmurd
When I first listened to this, I didn’t know what to make of it. Baauer, AlunaGeorge, and Rae Sremmurd all on one track? Somehow it works with each artist contributing their own signature sound, and then all tied together by Baauer.
7. Calvin Harris, “Dollar Signs” ft. Tinashe
Tinashe is one of the artists I’m looking forward to seeing more from. She’s more dynamic than “2 On.”
8. Jennifer Hudson, “It’s Your World” ft. R. Kelly
Jennifer Hudson delves into a disco house sound on this one, which is different from her usual R&B. I think her voice sounds real good on dance tracks.
9. Nicki Minaj, “Truffle Butter” ft. Drake & Lil Wayne
Young Money is representing on a track sampled from a…deep house song? COOL. Nicki kills it with her lyrics and delivery here.
10. Childish Gambino, “Pop Thieves (Make It Feel Good)”
Seagull sounds make appearances throughout the song, which of course makes me think of summer. And also of the Atlantic City boardwalk, a place where said seagulls are ready to drop a surprise on your head or peck your funnel cake right out of your hand (both of those things have happened to my dad, poor guy). Sorry, got a little off topic, but yeah, great song.
